Como Secondary College

GATE program entry through the WA Academic Selective Entrance Test — how to prepare your Year 4 or Year 5 child for selection.

About Como SC

Como Secondary College is one of the southern river suburbs' selective-entry GATE programs, located in Como between South Perth and Manning. It is well-positioned for families south of the river who want a strong academic environment without the Perth Modern intensity, with easy public transport access via the bus network and the freeway.

Como SC draws from Como, South Perth, Kensington, Manning, Karawara, Salter Point, Waterford, Bentley and surrounding south-Perth riverside suburbs. It is also a common destination for families further south who want a more accessible GATE entry pathway than Willetton or Rossmoyne SHS.

GATE programs at Como SC

Como SC runs the following Department of Education GATE programs:

  • GATE Academic Extension (Years 7-10)

Each program has its own intake size and audition or interview requirements beyond the GATE / ASET exam, so always cross-check the school's own admissions page before applying.

What the cut-off looks like

Como Secondary College GATE Academic typically sits in the 195-220 TSS band. It is competitive but generally a more accessible entry point than Perth Modern, Rossmoyne or Willetton GATE programs, and a good fit for students who are tracking strongly but not at the absolute top of the cohort.

Note: actual cut-offs shift slightly each year based on the cohort. The WA Department of Education publishes Total Standard Scores (TSS) historically per school — we recommend cross-checking the latest Department of Education figures before you build a goal score for your child.

How to prepare your child for Como SC entry

Como is often the realistic-target school for students whose mock scores are in the upper-middle of our cohort. The strategy is to lock in the cut-off comfortably rather than overshoot, so we focus on shoring up the weakest section first (usually Written Expression or Abstract Reasoning) and then pushing the strongest section higher only when there's buffer in the weakest.

Our in-person GATE classes at Rossmoyne SHS calibrate every weekly module to the practical cut-off range at this school, and our online platform covers the same material at $22 per week if in-person isn't practical for your family.

Before committing to any program, sit our Free GATE Mock Exam at Rossmoyne SHS this July. You'll get a section-by-section results report that tells you whether your child is tracking towards the Como SC cut-off, or which sections need most of the runway.
