Shenton College

GATE program entry through the WA Academic Selective Entrance Test — how to prepare your Year 4 or Year 5 child for selection.

About Shenton

Shenton College is one of Perth's strongest inner-western selective programs, located in Shenton Park near the University of Western Australia. It is particularly well-regarded for combining a high-achieving academic cohort with one of the most prestigious GATE Music programs in the state.

Shenton College draws from Shenton Park, Subiaco, Mosman Park, Cottesloe, Nedlands, Claremont and surrounding inner-western suburbs. It is also a common destination for families further afield who want a Perth Modern-adjacent academic standard without the fully-selective intensity.

GATE programs at Shenton

Shenton runs the following Department of Education GATE programs:

  • GATE Academic Extension (Years 7-10)
  • GATE Music (Years 7-12, requires audition)

Each program has its own intake size and audition or interview requirements beyond the GATE / ASET exam, so always cross-check the school's own admissions page before applying.

What the cut-off looks like

Shenton College GATE Academic typically sits in a competitive band around 215-235 TSS for recent intakes. GATE Music has an additional audition component on top of the ASET. The academic threshold is slightly lower but the audition is the decisive factor.

Note: actual cut-offs shift slightly each year based on the cohort. The WA Department of Education publishes Total Standard Scores (TSS) historically per school — we recommend cross-checking the latest Department of Education figures before you build a goal score for your child.

How to prepare your child for Shenton entry

For Shenton GATE Academic, balanced performance matters most, similar to the advice for Willetton. For Shenton GATE Music, the ASET still has to be passed at a competitive level, but the audition will be the most discriminating factor. Plan for both: academic prep through the year, audition prep alongside.
