Willetton Senior High School

GATE program entry through the WA Academic Selective Entrance Test — how to prepare your Year 4 or Year 5 child for selection.

About Willetton SHS

Willetton Senior High School is one of Western Australia's flagship selective-entry GATE Academic programs. Located in Willetton in southern Perth, it has a long-standing reputation for strong outcomes in mathematics, science and language, and an unusually engaged parent community.

Willetton SHS draws heavily from Willetton, Riverton, Rossmoyne, Bull Creek, Canning Vale, Leeming, Bateman and the surrounding southern Perth corridor. Many Willetton GATE students sat their primary school in Willetton PS, Burrendah PS, Rossmoyne PS or Bull Creek PS.

GATE programs at Willetton SHS

Willetton SHS runs the following Department of Education GATE programs:

  • GATE Academic Extension (Years 7-10)
  • Specialist Cricket Program
  • Aviation Program

Each program has its own intake size and audition or interview requirements beyond the GATE / ASET exam, so always cross-check the school's own admissions page before applying.

What the cut-off looks like

Willetton SHS GATE Academic typically requires a competitive Total Standard Score (TSS) on the ASET, generally sitting in the 220-240 range in recent years. It is one of the higher-cut-off non-Perth-Modern programs, especially among families south of the river.

Note: actual cut-offs shift slightly each year based on the cohort. The WA Department of Education publishes Total Standard Scores (TSS) historically per school — we recommend cross-checking the latest Department of Education figures before you build a goal score for your child.

How to prepare your child for Willetton SHS entry

Willetton SHS values consistent multi-section performance over single-section spikes. A child scoring strongly in maths but weakly in writing tends to be ranked below a student who is balanced across all four sections, even if the total is similar. Our advice: never let one section coast, because Reading Comprehension and Written Expression are where most "I thought I had this" families lose marks.

Our in-person GATE classes at Rossmoyne SHS calibrate every weekly module to the practical cut-off range at this school, and our online platform covers the same material at $22 per week if in-person isn't practical for your family.

Before committing to any program, sit our Free GATE Mock Exam at Rossmoyne SHS this July. You'll get a section-by-section results report that tells you whether your child is tracking towards the Willetton SHS cut-off, or which sections need most of the runway.
